A client recently asked me for a php script to perform a pretty simple operation. I couldn't take their money -- not all of it anyway. I saved myself some time and my client some money.

Programmers know that there is no reason to re-invent the wheel. Business people often don't realize that the wheel has already been invented, debugged, deployed, and offered to the world for free. The truth is that even if you hire a programmer, the chances are that they will hack someone else's script to suit your needs. This is not to say that custom scripts are not needed for complex tasks (and those tasks requiring tight security), but if it's not a mission-critical feature, check out the clearance bin before heading to a chi-chi boutique.
